It looks like YouTube star Jake Paul and former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley will be going one-on-one in the boxing ring.
Mike Coppinger of The Athletic is reporting that Paul and Woodley have agreed to fight in a boxing match. A staredown on June 4 in Miami is set to be in the cards. There is no word on a date for Paul vs. Woodley.
Paul has been dipping his toes in the boxing waters. The Internet celebrity has a pro boxing record of 3-0. In that span, he’s scored victories over AnEsonGib, who is also a YouTuber, Nate Robinson, who is a former NBA star, and Ben Askren, who once held gold in Bellator and ONE Championship.
Woodley once ruled the roost in the UFC at 170 pounds. During his path of destruction, he’s beaten the likes of Robbie Lawler, Stephen Thompson, Demian Maia, and Darren Till. Woodley has been struggling as of late, however. He lost four MMA bouts in a row and hasn’t earned a win since September 2018.
Back in April, it was revealed that Woodley was no longer under a UFC contract. That’s because he fought out of his deal. The two sides either couldn’t come to terms on a new deal or didn’t try to begin with.
Paul’s camp has made it clear that they want to continue having boxing matches with MMA fighters. Woodley is known for his punching power. In his last few unsuccessful outings, Woodley struggled with takedowns. He won’t have to worry about that in a boxing match. He won’t have to focus on kicking either. The one disadvantage is that Woodley doesn’t have any pro boxing experience and he’s more used to training for all aspects of MMA rather than one discipline. Paul has only had to focus on boxing.
Jake’s brother, Logan, is set to take on boxing Hall of Fame elect Floyd Mayweather on June 6. Jake is banned from attending the exhibition match as he snatched Mayweather’s hat during a media day event. PBC’s Al Haymon, promoter of the event, made the call to have Jake banned from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida on fight night.
