Manchester United to Stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Despite Dark Liverpool Loss

In the Premier League season dubbed the most competitive title race since its inception, record premier league titleholders and favorites, Man United, languish seventh. After a remarkable 5-1 win to start the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges have managed just four points out of a possible 15 in their last five games. They are winless in the previous four and lack a home clean sheet in ten games. Fans, soccer pundits, and according to reports, even some squad members are putting the poor performance and result down to their manager, Solskjaer.

Manchester United’s 5-0 home loss to their fiercest rivals, Liverpool, was hard to take. Liverpool’s team of grafters made a United team with a plethora of world-class stars look like boys. When the team sheets were announced, Man U fans were hopeful after Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp opted to leave some key regulars such as Matip, Fabinho, and Mane on the bench.

Despite their slight personnel weakness on paper, Liverpool ran the show scoring four by halftime, one of United’s biggest home losses. The cracks that were showing throughout the season were split open with direct, energetic, and well-thought-out patterns of play by the team from Merseyside. For all the talk about the starting teams, the real difference lay in the quality and abilities of the men picking the team.

After the loss, Solskjaer labeled it the darkest day in his soccer management but hailed it as a chance to bounce back. The big question, however, post-match was, will he get a chance to bounce back. United fans and soccer pundits championed United to sack Ole and bring in a manager with winning experience and sharp tactical nous.

To many Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seen to lack the tactical awareness possessed by fellow top managers. In addition, his character and ability to get the best out of star players together are also being questioned. The summer arrivals of serial winner Varane, golden boy Sancho, and GOAT Ronaldo have disoriented and shifted the balance of the starting 11 negatively.

With no clear starting eleven yet, fans wonder how far Ole can drive Man United. Reports yesterday came out suggesting United had contacted Antonio Conte on his availability to coach united. However, some 24 hours later, the club seemingly backs their man, Ole, one more time.

Despite the unfortunate result, the club is prioritizing performance improvement from now on. According to inside sources, coaching changes early at the start of the season may prove more derailing than uniting. The club owners and board are thus backing Solskjaer to turn it around, and fast he should as pressure keeps mounting.

With that kind of trust behind him, Ole will now be hoping to inspire his team back into form amidst a challenging fixture list. On the weekend, United visit Tottenham before traveling to Italy to battle Atalanta. Right after that is a mammoth match against hometown rivals Manchester City.

In spite of speculation that some of his players doubt his coaching abilities, Ole took over club training Tuesday morning with his team. While his abilities may be in question, Ole’s belief is strong. His post-match statements echo this, stating he is banking on his strong foundations and development so far and that giving up on the theatre of dreams is unimaginable. However, he too is more than aware of the results and believes change is coming, and now United are giving him more time to do so.
