Dustin Johnson Sets a Record at the Masters

After four days of golf at the Augusta National Golf Club, the Masters golf championship ended on Sunday, November 15, and thirty-six year old Dustin Johnson set a new record with an impressive score of 268. Johnson managed to finish the 72-hole event with a final score of 20 under par, which is the lowest score ever recorded. To give a comparison, golf legend Tiger Woods has only managed to end the championship with a score of 18 under par, which he accomplished in 1997. Golfer Jordan Spieth repeated Woods’ feat in 2015. This record-setting win was Johnson’s first time to ever win the Masters championship, although he had previously made it to the final round several times.

The day started off with a couple of early mistakes. Johnson ended with a score of 70 during the final round of the championship after he received a bogey on two holes during the final round. However, he made up for that later on with two birdies. He had began the final round with a small but significant lead of four strokes. The two bogeys during the final round were the only bogeys Johnson had during the last 48 holes of the championship. Even though he had two bogeys during the final round, Johnson had a total of only four bogeys throughout the tournament. This is also a new record for the championship. The previous record had been five bogeys.

Johnson is currently the world’s top-ranked golfer, but he told interviewers he was “nervous all day” during the final round. His brother, Austin, who works as his caddie, also admitted to being nervous. Johnson’s only prior championship win had been four years ago at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, and at one point during the final round, Johnson’s lead narrowed to only a single stroke. His birdies helped him clinch the title.

Although the day had started off a bit rough, Johnson went into the last hole with a five-stroke lead. After finishing the last hole, Johnson’s partner, Paulina Gretzky, met him for a congratulatory kiss. Gretzky is the daughter of hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky and the mother of Johnson’s children.

Finally the moment that Johnson had been waiting for came. Tiger Woods placed the coveted green jacket on Johnson. Woods displayed a beaming smile as he congratulated Johnson on his victory. Johnson’s eyes filled with tears as he tried to answer interview questions.
