Bindi Irwin is going to be a mom!
The 22-year-old made the exciting announcement on her Instagram on Tuesday by sharing a photo of her and new husband, Chandler Powell, both holding up an infant’s khaki shirt with the words “Australian Zoo” across the chest.
The newlywed also shared some details about her first pregnancy, writing that, although she’s only in the first trimester, she and Powell wanted to share the news with fans so that they can “be a part of our journey from the beginning of this new life chapter.”
She also shared with fans how much their support means to them, and asked for “good vibes & prayers to our little sweetheart.”
After Irwin made the announcement, her husband of five months also weighed in on the news. Powell wrote on Twitter that learning he’s about to be a father has been “the highlight of my life.” He also expressed his admiration for his wife, writing that Irwin is going to be “the most amazing mother.”
Irwin lost her father, conservationist Steve Irwin, in 2006 to a freak stingray accident. The 44-year-old was filming a television show at the time of his death.
His death sent shock waves across the world, with people from all over mourning the death of “the Crocodile Hunter.” Since his death, Bindi, along with her mother Terri and brother Robert, have continued his wildlife conservation efforts. They even have their own show on Animal Planet called, “Crikey! It’s the Irwins”.
Terri also expressed her excitement over pending new addition to her family, writing on Twitter that, “This is the best day ever! I’m over the moon to announce that @BindiIrwin and @chandlerpowell9 are going to have a baby!”.
The soon-to-be grandma also reflected on the loss of her husband Steve, saying that, “While I wish Steve was here to share this beautiful moment, I know that he would be so proud.”
Although Irwin and Powell have only been married for five months, they’ve known each other for seven years. The couple met in 2013 when Powell was visiting Australia for a wakeboarding competition.
While he was there, he visited the Australian Zoo, where Bindi just happened to be giving zoo tours that day. The two instantly hit it off, and Powell, who originally hails from Florida, made the move to Australia in 2018 before popping the question to his girlfriend of six years.
The adjustment to the “Land Down Under” was an easy one for Powell, who quickly donned his khaki and began helping the family out with their wildlife conservation efforts. He even proposed to Bindi at the Australian Zoo where they first met, surrounded by the animals that they both love so much.
It’s no surprise that this new little bundle of joy will be a part of the family business as well. Irwin even said so herself, writing in her announcement on Instagram, “Baby Wildlife Warrior due 2021.”
The new baby will likely continue on the tradition started by his or her great-grandparents in the 1970s, when they first opened the Australian Zoo. Steve was an integral part of the zoo’s success up until his death. Terri, Bindi, Robert, Chandler, and now this new little boy or girl will continue to bring attention to wildlife conservation through both the zoo and their television appearances.
