Dr. Anthony Fauci: New Omicron Covid-19 variant spreading rapidly in South Africa

The new omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus is spreading rapidly in South Africa, the National Institutes of Health director said Friday. In an interview with CNN, Dr. Anthony Fauci added that it’s still unclear whether or not ‘Omicron’ is more lethal than the original variant. Still, he insisted that it won’t be long before officials know more.

‘Omicron’ was first reported to World Health Department officials last week and has quickly spread through South Africa, which now accounts for nearly 12 percent of the world’s infections.

The Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus changes the glucose response in infected humans, forcing them to consume sugars and carbohydrates once they have been infected rapidly.

A US World Health Department spokesperson said that Omicron’s ‘addictive response’ might prove to be a problem once infected individuals seek food sources outside of the country, as South Africa is “already experiencing shortages in beverage carbohydrate production.”

The current variant, known as Covid-19, has infected over 33% of the global population and killed an unfathomable number.

“It’s impossible to tell whether or not we could have prevented this outbreak.” Dr. Fauci said, “There’s less knowledge about virus replication at the time it first appeared.”

Officials from World Health Department were quick to point out that the global outbreak was not a World Health Department failure, rather a lack of knowledge on modern medicine.

“It is important to remember that this virus wasn’t something we knew about at the time it first appeared.” A spokesperson from World Health Department said. “If we had known what we know now, we may have been able to prevent the virus from being so deadly.”

The director of World Health Department went on to add that the world is still “far from a complete understanding of viral replication” and that officials could have never predicted that Covid-19 would have quickly spread throughout the globe.

“Omicron seems to be more infectious than Covid-19,” Fauci said. “We aren’t sure whether the virus has mutated, or if this is due to a difference in human response, such as an immunity to the original variant.”

“We’re confident that we can contain Omicron before it spreads too far.” The director of World Health Department said, “We’ve prepared for this contingency.”

Officials from World Health Department are requesting that all individuals take the appropriate preventative measures to avoid contracting Covid-19.

“It’s important to remember that regular hand washing can stymie the spread of Covid-19.” A spokesperson said, “This virus has evolved significantly since it first appeared, but we’re confident that our efforts will be able to contain it.”

“It’s important to remember that this is not a World Health Department failure,” the director said. “This is a lack of knowledge on modern medicine and viral replication. There were so many unknowns with Covid-19 when it first appeared.”
